Stefan

A manipulative, cowardly Vistani man who presented himself as charming and handsome but was fundamentally self-serving and dangerous. He was voted out of his own camp onto Raxandra's mission because he was unwanted, and Diona revealed he served something "new and worse" than Strahd. Lured beyond the camp's protective wards by Aleric, he was killed by an unknown force and found impaled on a tree of bones with a Tarokka card — "The Innocent," crossed out — stuffed in his empty eye socket.

Overview

Stefan was a member of Raxandra's Vistani band, assigned to the mission to find an ancient ring for Madam Eva. He was not chosen for skill or trust — he was voted to go by his own camp because he was unwelcome there. He presented a charming exterior but was fundamentally cowardly, vain, and willing to endanger others for self-preservation. During the scarecrow attack that killed Petru, he deliberately pushed Diona into danger and then fled toward the party shouting for help rather than fighting.

His true allegiance remained a mystery. Diona whispered to the party that Stefan served something other than Strahd — "Whatever he says he serves, it is not the master I grew up fearing. It is something new and worse." The Vistani could take no direct action against him by honor and right, but Diona asked the party to lure him beyond the camp's protective wards, where he would be unprotected.

Session 04 — First and Final Encounter

Stefan was first seen arguing with the other Vistani near a dead tree about a buried object. During the scarecrow attack, Aleric's Insight check revealed Stefan deliberately pushed Diona into the creature's path. He then ran toward the party shouting "There's help coming! I shall go and retrieve them!" while displaying obvious reluctance to actually fight. After Raxandra defeated the scarecrow, Stefan was confronted about his cowardice and responded with practiced deflection: "What can I say? I'm a lover not a fighter. I'm a peacemaker not a war maker."

After Petru's burial — which Raxandra forced Stefan to dig — the party settled into camp. Diona whispered her request to Aleric: get Stefan beyond the wards. That night, Aleric woke Stefan and told him Diona was waiting for him deep in the woods for a romantic encounter. Stefan's vanity required almost no persuasion. He declared "No one can resist the charms of Stefan," performed a revolting pre-performance ritual in his tent, and walked confidently into the dark woods with his belt folded in his hand.

The next morning, Stefan was found impaled on a tree of bones that had not been there before, twenty feet outside the camp. His mouth was stuffed with ash. His eyes lay on the ground staring up at him. His genitalia were scattered around the base. In his empty right eye socket, Raxandra found a folded Tarokka card: "The Innocent," with the word crossed out.
